Behind the Burly Q is Leslie Zemeckis’ documentary of the history of burlesque and is a must see for any fan of the traditional art form!
Released in 2010, it features interviews with many of the biggest names in burlesque history, many of whom have sadly passed away before the film’s debut.
There are loads of film clips and photo collages as you find in any documentary, but it’s the interviews that really set this one apart. There’s plenty of places to see the same footage of these classic dances, but the people who were there and the little known stories behind their headlines are precious and fading.
The DVD also features several “behind the scene” features that are also worth watching.
Burlesque is an old and uniquely American tradition and most of the legends, dancers, comedians and theater owners, are all gone. I’m so thankful Leslie captured some of their stories here.
In the old Rogers and Ebert fashion, I give this one an enthusiastic two thumbs up!
