I have mermaids on the brain. I think it’s because I had a one week vacation on Kauai and the snuba and snorkeling left an indelible imprint.
Partly though, it’s the season of introspection. I’m feeling immensely grateful for my many blessing and I’m contemplating my intentions for the new year. So the mermaid is a perfect motif. She’s a shaman of sorts; bridging the world of us land-bound mortals and the realm of the archetypal abyss.
I like to think of my mermaids as guides helping me to go deeper into my authentic self. I am in search of my shadow as well as the pearls of wisdom I might find hidden there.
Ironically, digital collage is a nice outlet when I’m trying to avoid writing!
That’s the Trickster element, that is! I know how the shadow energies work!
I’m also currently reading a great book called Shadow Dance – Liberating The Power & Creativity of Your Dark Side by Jungian psychotherapist David Richo.
So I created this fun image to celebrate my interests in the depths and to stay true to own goals for myself as I journey there.
My collages are all learning projects and while I’m sometimes embarrassed that they are not as sophisticated or as polished as I’d like, I really try embrace a sense of play and reject the shackles of perfection.
This collage consists of five different photos, multiple layers and editing, and more time that I care to admit! But it has been fun and I can at least see my own progress in my skills. Faint progress, but progress nonetheless!
Blessings of the dark season on your journey.
