Oh this is so tempting! Here’s an article about the circus arts being the latest fitness craze in the bay area.
I’m pretty easily distracted by all kinds of movement, but I’ve never actually done any kind of ariel or trapeze work. I almost did once at Burning Man about 10 years ago, but a sandstorm got in the way of that.
Is it just me or are the circus arts getting crazy popular in just the last year or so?
It seems everywhere I turn, circus and fire arts are on everybody’s radar. Hooping too.
I was also just invited to a circus inspired event in Oakland this weekend that I can’t attend. It’s a Burning-Man-esque fire circus kind of thing. Looks awesome.

I really think the world of freaks and alternative types has gotten mainstream in a big way though. All I know is that the stuff I’ve always thought was really fabulous, that used to be way under the radar, is suddenly really popular.
Maybe this is just because I live in the Bay area of California- home base for the Burning Man Freaks that I think are popularizing so many different kinds of exotic dance, movement and lifestyle stuff.
What else could it be? Is it reality TV? Is it Burning Man?
Actually, I think it’s the advent of You-tube and the relatively recent ability to capture and share performances via cell phones with video capability and an ever increasing internet speed and whatnot.
What was once really peripheral, niche kind of stuff has been brought smack-dab into the middle of mainstream consciousness in a very big way.
(Whether or not that’s a good thing is a post for another day.)
